Monica Van De Laak – Morning People Coffee Cart

From Dream to Reality: Monica’s Journey with Morning People

Monica Van De Laak is the creative mind behind Morning People, a charming vintage-style coffee van that’s become a favorite in Perth’s northern coastal area. She turned her dream into reality by designing and building the van from scratch and now serves up memorable coffee experiences every morning.

A Bumpy Ride with a Sweet Ending

Starting a new business is never easy, and Monica had her fair share of challenges. On top of the usual hurdles of convincing people to change their coffee routine, she was also juggling a young toddler and a second pregnancy during a Perth summer. But Monica didn’t let these obstacles stop her. Her dream of serving coffee by the ocean became a reality, and Morning People quickly became a beloved spot in the community.

How It All Started

The idea for Morning People hit Monica while she was on maternity leave with her first baby. She saw a gap for great coastal coffee and decided to fill it. With her love for hospitality and a background in business, she wanted to show her kids what she was capable of and create something special for everyone to enjoy. Morning People was born out of her passion to combine a great coffee experience with the beauty of Perth’s coastline.

How the SEA Program Made a Difference

Starting a business can be tough, and Monica found the first year especially challenging. Luckily, the Self-Employment Assistance (SEA) program was there to help. With the guidance of her mentor, Monica gained the confidence to make key decisions and keep her business on track. The regular mentoring sessions helped her stay focused, refine her marketing strategies, and keep an eye on her business growth.

The SEA program also helped Monica expand her marketing efforts beyond social media, using newsletters, local newspapers, and networking to get her name out there. This approach played a big part in Morning People’s success.

Celebrating Big Wins

Monica has hit some fantastic milestones with Morning People. One of the highlights was being featured in the Sunday Times in January 2024, where she talked about the growing popularity of alternative milks in coffee. The article praised her fair pricing and commitment to plant-based options, which attracted new customers and boosted her business.

Another big achievement? Maintaining a 4.9-star Google rating from 28 reviews. It’s a testament to the quality service Monica provides and the love her customers have for Morning People.

Making a Difference in the Community

Monica’s success isn’t just about the coffee. She’s also making a positive impact on her community. She’s employed local students, supported charitable causes, and promotes sustainable practices with reusable takeaway options. Monica’s dedication to her community and her commitment to reducing waste show just how much she cares.

Looking Ahead

Monica Van De Laak’s journey with Morning People is a fantastic example of turning a dream into a thriving business. With the help of the SEA program, she’s not only made her vision come true but also made a real difference in her community.
